About Border Collies
The Border Collie is one of the world’s most respected herding breeds, known for its intelligence, agility, stamina, and remarkable ability to work closely with people. The breed developed along the English-Scottish border, where hardworking sheepdogs were selectively bred for generations based on their herding ability rather than appearance.
The Border Collie’s working history dates back centuries. Local sheepdogs developed into different types depending on the region and the work they performed, eventually becoming the highly capable working Border Collie we know today.
One of the most influential dogs in the breed’s history was Old Hemp, bred by Adam Telfer in Northumberland in the late 19th century. Old Hemp was an exceptional herding dog whose working ability had a major influence on future generations of Border Collies.
Sheepdog trials also played an important role in establishing the breed. The first recorded international sheepdog trial was held in Wales in 1873, showcasing the Border Collie’s natural ability to control livestock through intelligence, focus, and precise movement.
The name “Border Collie” was introduced in the early 20th century to distinguish these working sheepdogs from other Collie types. Unlike breeds developed primarily for appearance, Border Collies were traditionally selected for their working ability, temperament, athleticism, and trainability.
Today, the Border Collie remains one of the most intelligent and versatile working breeds in the world. While many now live as family companions, they continue to excel in herding, obedience, agility, search and rescue, detection work, and other activities that allow them to use both their body and mind.

Our love for Border Collies began long before Cedar Rock was established. Growing up with a Border Collie taught us just how intelligent, loyal, affectionate, and devoted this breed can be. That early experience stayed with us and eventually inspired us to share the same joy with other families.
Over the years, our knowledge and appreciation for Border Collies has continued to grow. We love their intelligence and willingness to learn, but we also understand that they are active working dogs that need proper exercise, training, attention, and companionship.
Today, our family is committed to raising puppies in a caring environment where they receive plenty of human interaction, age-appropriate socialization, proper nutrition, and veterinary care. We spend time with our puppies every day, helping them become confident and well-adjusted before they leave for their new homes.
